6TH ANNUAL SCOUTS OCEANOGRAPHY MERIT BADGE DAYS AT MARITIME MUSEUM OF SAN DIEGO
June 14, July 26, August 9
Maritime Museum of San Diego, home to one of the world’s largest collections of historic vessels, fascinating exhibits, and on-the-water adventure guest experiences, will host the 6th Annual Oceanography Merit Badge Days Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. June 14, July 26 and August 9. Scouts BSA youth may enroll to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge through participation in one of three Saturday classes at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Scouts must complete one class to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge so participants can choose the date that works for them.
The program gives local scouting youth the opportunity to more deeply explore the ocean that is so integral to the San Diego community. By combining field work, laboratory observation, and scholarly discussion, Oceanography Merit Badge Days at the Maritime Museum of San Diego allow scouts to become fully immersed in the multiple branches of oceanographic research.
Merit Badge counselor and Eagle Scout John Walsh captures the essence of why the program is so impactful for participants, “San Diego Bay serves as the perfect location for Scouts BSA Youth to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge. Being at the Maritime Museum of San Diego allows us to connect scouts directly with the oceanic waters they are studying, performing plankton tows and scientific testing. This is the kind of hands-on, practical learning that is the cornerstone of the scouting experience.”
For 25 years, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has hosted highly popular and award-winning year-round educational events for hundreds of educators looking for exceptional, educational, and experiential programming for youth programs and students.
Tickets are $59.00 per participating scout and $24.00 per accompanying adult and includes general admission to explore the Maritime Museum of San Diego after class. Each scout or group of scouts is required to be accompanied by a parent or adult chaperone. All Scouting America Youth Protection guidelines must be followed at any event with registered Scouts present. Reservations must be made online in advance at sdmaritime.org. Space is limited and enrollment is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants with any questions may be directed to peterd@sdmaritime.org.
