Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off
June 28, 10am-8pm
The Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off is expected to draw a crowd of more than 50,000 people on June 28. Visitors can enjoy fun in the sun complete with festival foods, art, beachfront entertainment, shopping, and contests. The fair runs on Saturday, from 10am to 8pm.
The Chili Cook-Off takes place in the grassy area between Newport Avenue and the beach. Competitors show off their cooking skills to compete for prizes. If eating chili sounds more appealing, attendees can put their tastebuds to the test and cast a vote alongside the judges. Prizes are awarded for Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award, and People’s Choice Award. Chili tasting begins at 11am.
There are three stages of non-stop music throughout the day. Genres include acoustic, rock, blues, alternative, and Americana. The main stage is next to the Beachside Beer Garden, which offers ocean views and ice cold brews for ages 21 and older. Those with a competitive streak can participate in the Hodad’s Burger Eating contest, or stick around for the announcement of the Chili Cook-Off winners.
Artists Alley is the place to shop for unique handcrafted items by local and regional artists and crafters. Artists entertain visitors with live art demonstrations. For an even more interactive experience, visitors of all ages can become artists by painting a part of a community mural. For $20, participants can purchase a square and receive a palette of paint. These squares sell out quickly, so participants are encouraged to come early.
There is also a Kids Fun Zone, located in the parking lot near the corner of Newport Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.
This event is free. The street fair takes place along Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. There is a free bike valet, courtesy of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, as well as five free trolleys, from Old Town Trolley Tour Company, that run continuously.
