Aug 19 – 20
Over 350 of the best bodysurfers from around the world will kick, stroke, catch and compete at the 41st annual World Bodysurfing Championships on August 19 and 20 at Oceanside Pier.
The contest starts at 6:30 am each morning. The semi-finals and finals take place for all age brackets on August 20. The Men and Women’s Grand Championships follow the final for the last age group and champions are crowned thereafter. Heats last 15 minutes, with at least two contestants per heat advancing to the next round. World Bodysurfing Championship event organizers reserve the right to change the projected schedule for various weather, surf conditions and quantity of competitors. Vendors will also be on the Strand throughout the weekend.
The World Bodysurfing Championships, which began in 1977, is one of the biggest bodysurfing competitions in the world. For those unfamiliar with the sport of bodysurfing, bodysurfers ride waves without the assistance of any buoyant device, such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swim fins that help to optimize propulsion so it is easier to catch large and fast breaking waves.
