September 8 – 10
The Oceanside Firefighters Charity event takes place on September 8 and features public safety officers surfing in a fun-filled event. It is followed by the 21st annual Surf for the Sea event, which takes place on September 9 and 10. Both events are held at Oceanside Harbor’s North Jetty.
Surf for the Sea is a commemorative surfing event in loving memory of the late Harry Bennett, Steve Leighton, Tore Bonura, Chuck “Clubber” Hundley, Banning Capps, Court Overin, John Craven, Midget Smith, Casey Williams, Chris Pompa, Michael Pultz, Susie Prestie, John Douglas, Brandon Dreyer and Logan Lipton, all local surfers and family of Surf for the Sea who have passed away. The memorial event benefits the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Chapter in their quest to protect the coast, ocean, waves and beaches. Surf for the Sea also includes a Beach Clean-Up that ties into the theme of environmental awareness.
The competition starts each day at 7 am. Trophies will be awarded in 15 divisions. The entry fee is $50 for amateur and $100 for the Pro Division. All competitors receive an event T-shirt, lunch catered by local Oceanside restaurant Johnny Manana’s, and a chance at the opportunity raffle including surfboards, wetsuits, and great prizes provided by the surfing industry.
